Bring Your Own Device

BYOD

byod (Taken with my android...)

Before we begin this topic, let's make sure all of us know what BYOD means.  BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device (you may have heard this as BYOT as well - Bring Your Own Technology).  Students, teachers, and others involved in the school system bring their own electronic devices for use in the instructional process.

The YouTube video below is a very basic video that explains BYOD.

Why BYOD?

BYOD/BYOT Sample Lesson

The BYOD/BYOT Sample Lesson video demonstrates many 21st century learning skills that are targeted and achieved simply because students were able to use their own technology in the classroom.  They were allowed to partner and share one student's technology.  They could work alone.  In any event, technology was used to assist with the completion of a cross-curricular project.

Seven articles are provided below.  Each article presents a key element that must be considered when BYOD is implemented in your school and classroom.  Click each link to read the key articles.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD/BYOT) Student Instructions

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD/BYOT) Student Instructions YouTube video provides a great example for how BYOD can be explained to students for usage.  Examples of when and how to use the technology are provided.  An AUP was mentioned as a requirement to participate.

ASSIGNMENT:

We have read and watched many informational pieces regarding BYOD.  This process of information has discussed what BYOD is, the need for proper planning and implementation (several steps were presented in detail), challenges faced with implementation of BYOD, and scenarios given for using BYOD.  We ended with a checklist for teacher readiness and BYOD and COPPA .  Are you ready for implementation?  Do you understand COPPA?  How likely are you and your school district to consider implementing BYOD?  Use the discussion board on the next page to answer these questions.  Also, provide at least 2 resources that you have researched that discuss BYOD, how to implement, how to use in the classroom, and more.  Tell why you believe these are great.

CANVAS CONNECTION:

Many districts do not possess the resources (technology, finiancial, manpower, etc.) needed for every classroom to have its own computer lab.  Therefore, BYOD is a reasonable option.  Did you know that three school districts in Mississippi currently are BYOD districts?  Those students who have the technology could use it in the classroom and allow others to share with them or use the resources the school does have.  Also, students can stay in contact with the course material in Canvas for remediation, assignment submission, grade checking, and more through the use of BYOD whether in the classroom with the instructor or outside the classroom.
